PARKERSBURG — No football games in Williamstown on Friday night, regardless of schedule.
The Yellowjackets were originally scheduled to host Warren at 7:00 p.m. Friday, but the game took place on the stadium field at 4:00 p.m. Saturday. Williamstown’s home his field is not ready to play after renovations in the offseason.
Williamstown opened the season with a 46-22 victory over Waterford, with Warren conceding 28-24 to Morgan.
“I thought I played hard” Williamstown head coach Chris Beck said: “We controlled the line of scrimmage. There’s a lot to clean up, but the effort is there and it’s a good starting point.”
Williamstown displayed a balanced attacking attack against Waterford. Ricky Allen rushed his 20th to gain 79 yards and Maxwell his Moressa on his 11 carries he added 77 yards. Moressa also completed 10 of 12 pass attempts for 134 yards and his top target, Louis Goodnow, caught six balls for 89 yards.
“They are a very good team” Warren head coach Jimmy Payton said: “They have a very talented quarterback. They have a lot of tradition. They’re very disciplined, they’ll play good, they’ll play hard.”
Warren has some excellent offensive weapons of his own. Jason Williams made his 2022 debut against Morgan and recorded his 141 yards with 12 rushes. Williamstown appeared to have a hole in their run defense last week as Waterford tallied his 224 yards on his 27 runs.
Quarterback Trent Taylor had 162 yards on 15-of-28 passes. Freshman wideout Tanner his pepper had a breakout his game, and for 138 yards he caught seven receptions.
“they are good” Beck said. “They’re a good football team. They have a lot of weapons. They’re explosive. Their defense is physical and aggressive. They’ve got their hands full on Saturday. It’s going to be good.”
Pepper’s appearance in Warren’s offense should come as no surprise to Payton.
“Pepper is one of those kids who know that as a coach, there are only a handful of kids like him who have the opportunity.” Peyton said. “He will be a player who will make a difference in four years. increase.”
Another Warrior to watch is sophomore Aden Strahler, who has led the WHS in tackles in the first two games.
Warren didn’t score a win last week, but Peyton saw a lot of what he liked.
“We fought hard” He said. “Obviously, we made some mistakes, and that’s what you get when you start 6th and 1st grade. There is, it’s not that there’s a lack of effort, attitude or discipline, they’ve learned their role and they understand things.”
The two teams met in Vincent last season, with the Yellow Jackets winning 34-6. Williamstown will open the 2022 season with games against Waterford and Warren, as well as Fort His Fly and Marietta later in the year.
“This is what the schedule looks like” Beck said. “We schedule out of necessity.
Beck’s team is no stranger to games being moved to Saturday.
“It’s kind of like a playoff week in that respect.” Pointing out the key to Saturday’s victory, he said, “Controlling the line of scrimmage, winning turnover battles, limiting offense. When you put it all together, it’s a crime that can hurt you in many ways.”
Payton believes his talented offense has a big challenge ahead of Williamstown’s defense.
“They are playing very good defense.” He said. “It’s true that they are going to be very aggressive and fly around football.
“The main thing we have to do is manage the football and make sure we can play without turnovers. We have to block and tackle as we know we can. Those are the keys. We have to be structured and disciplined in our approach.”
