Fitter and Faster Swim Camps are sponsors of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud of these athletes and the people who have supported them on their journey.
Jr. Jerry (JC) Gordon of Liberty Christian Academy has made verbal commitments to participate in Virginia Tech’s men’s swim program beginning fall 2024.
“I am very much looking forward to becoming a Hawkeye and joining a program that is definitely on the rise. I felt at home when I visited the campus. I want to thank my teammates, my family, I can’t wait to work with VT’s coaching staff, they have been amazing during this process, GoHokies!
Gordon swims year-round with the Lynchburg YMCA swim team based in Virginia. He is a capricious freestyler who specializes in his events, mostly long distance freestyles. He improved by nearly 35 seconds last year alone in his 1650 free.
Best Time (SCY):
- 50 free – 21.62
- 100 free – 47.04
- 200 Free – 1:40.49
- 500 Free – 4:30.53
- 1650 Free – 15:38.65
At the 2022 VHSL Class 3 Swimming & Diving Championships, Gordon finished second in the 200 free (1:40.50) and second in the 500 free (4:31.04). In the 2021 edition of the competition, he scored 100 free with a best time of 47.04.
Outside of the high school season, Gordon has shown that longer races better play to his strengths, posting a 15:38.65 at the 2021 NC YOTA and finishing among 15-16 in the 1650 freestyle last year. It was ranked 32nd nationally in the Arena Capital Classic.
The Virginia Tech men placed 11th at the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with 143 points. Most of their points came from his specialist in the sprint, Youssef Ramadan, who in the 50 frees he finished seventh (19.04) and in the 100 frees he finished 11th (41.72).
This year, the best time for a Virginia Tech swimmer in the 500 freestyle so far was Luis Dominguez’s time of 4:29.46. This is still very early in the NCAA season, but Gordon’s 500 hours as a high school sophomore fit well into the program. Last year, the Hokies had no competitors in his NCAA championship 1650. Best Filippo Dalmaso in the ACC he was 21st as he clocked 15:19.30.
Gordon will join Lynchburg YMCA teammate Brendan Whitfield (2023 high school class) at Virginia Tech. Whitfield is a sprint specialist, with a 43.80 100 free and he clocked a 1:36.78 200, placing him 12th in the 2023 boys high school class of SwimSwam’s top 20 NCAA swim recruits.
JC is the younger brother of University of Kentucky swimmer John Michael Gordon.
