All three of the network’s evening news shows saw viewership decline from the previous week, according to Nielsen’s live and intraday data.

World News Tonight saw a 2% drop in total viewers compared to the previous week (July 25th), and a 3% drop from the 25-54 adult demo. World News Tonight’s total viewership has remained stable, with adults aged 25-54 down 5% from the same week in 2021 (August 2nd).
NBC Nightly News Lester Holt Total viewership for linear networks averaged 6.02 million, down 3% from the previous week, and 927,000 adults aged 25-54, down 3% from the previous week. The 6.02 million figure ranks it third for US television, excluding specials, sports and syndication. The Nightly News saw the steepest year-on-year decline among the three evening news broadcasts, with a 13% drop in total viewership and a 35% drop in adults between the ages of 25 and 54. This bad trend isn’t particularly surprising given that the week a year ago was also the second week of his 2020 Summer Olympics delay, which aired on NBC. Adults ages 25-54 watch more nightly news than usual during the week of the NBC Olympics. This may explain the discrepancy between year-over-year viewership declines for adults aged 25-54 and year-over-year viewership declines for older viewers.

Additionally, on Thursday, August 4, NBC Nightly was retitled “NBC Nightly News” for NFL preseason football. The retitled broadcast was removed from the season and weekly averages. That means his week of August 1st on NBC Nightly News is based on his four days instead of five.
