in brief: Tech returns the work of one of the country’s top punters and his deep snapper, along with several other experienced special teams. The question is whether the Red Raiders can lose him one of the Big 12 best kickers of 2021.
stock: under. It’s not Austin McNamara’s fault. He set a school and Big 12 single-season record for his punt average of 48.2 yards last season, and netted Tech with his punts (43.98 yards) that led him to his fifth in the FBS. His average of 46.3 yards in his three seasons puts him in position to break Taylor’s 43.7 yards average, his Symank school career record. Also returning are primary return specialists Adrian Frye and Chadarius Townshend, deep snapper Jackson Knotts, and coverage unit standouts Tyric Matthews, Patrick Curry and Bryce Ramirez. The latter three were credited with 5, 4 and 3 tackles, respectively, covering punts and kicks. However, Tech avoided a six-game losing streak last season, partly because Jonathan Garibay scored his goal in his two-game winning streak in his 15-16 season. Fighting to replace Garibay are Trey Wolfe, who is 20-22 and hopes to recapture his 2019 form, and Gino, who has moved from Houston, his Baptiste, to his Garcia, who will be his 32-year-old. His career field goals include his 6 of his 48+ yards.
