The US Open is set to start on Monday, and it will be the first time the sisters have played the tournament together since 2014. Serena and Venus won her tournament in doubles at the US Open in 1999 and again in 2009. The last time we played together in the majors was the 2018 French Open.
In an interview with Vogue, Serena announced that she was retiring from tennis, but she didn’t want to use the term.
“It doesn’t feel like modern language. Evolution is probably the best word to describe what I’m trying to do: I’m moving away from tennis and evolving towards other things that matter to me. I’m here to let you know that I’m here,” she told the magazine.
Serena said she wants to focus on her venture capital firm, which she “quietly started” a few years ago, and plans to expand her family.
She didn’t reveal when she would retire, but hinted that the US could be her last appearance when she tweeted, “The countdown has begun…going to enjoy the next few weeks.”
