PITTSBURGH — The 2022 Backyard Brawl, the first ballgame matchup between the Pitt Panthers and the West Virginia Mountaineers, set a new record for attendance at a sporting event in the city of Pittsburgh.
A crowd of 70,622 packed Acrysure Stadium to see the Panthers and Mountaineers renew their storied rivalry, breaking the previous record set by another rivalry game. His 2018 contest between Pitt and Penn State recorded his highest ever audience of 69,983.
Having the Panthers’ opponents nearby definitely contributed to those flashy numbers, but Pitt’s fans were just as excited to face those bitter foes.
