Friday night’s preseason finale wasn’t very kind to New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Trevor Penning. The rookie from Northern Iowa has been off the field for an extended period of time due to an injury.
It was initially reported that Penning was dealing with a lawn toe case.
Penning has suffered a torn ligament in his foot, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He will need surgery and will be out indefinitely.
Penning wasn’t listed as the Saints’ starting left tackle—that job belongs to James Hurst.
There is no sugar coating on this news. Losing Penning indefinitely is a difficult pill to swallow.
Penning, the 19th overall pick in this year’s draft, was named the Saints’ long-term left tackle. Those plans weren’t derailed by this injury, but I don’t want to miss out on any significant amount of time in my rookie year.
Hopefully, Penning will make a full and speedy recovery from this leg injury.
