of Jimmy Garoppolo San Francisco’s days aren’t over yet.
The 49ers agreed Monday to restructure the one-year deal that would see the longtime starting quarterback, ESPN and NFL Network reported. This move came as a bit of a surprise.
According to the NFL Network, Garoppolo’s new contract has a base salary of $6.5 million (down from $24.2 million on his previous deal), with incentives that could earn him nearly $10 million more. The deal includes a no-trade and no-tag clause, ensuring Garoppolo will remain with the 49ers throughout the season.
The 49ers were looking for a trade partner for Garoppolo, but that market practically dried up in the spring as Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery on his pitching arm and several teams filled QB1 vacancies in free agency and the draft. His $24.2 million base salary, $26.9 million cap hit and $2 million deadcap this season ensured San Francisco would cut him by Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline, but hit everything.
Garoppolo, 30, has a 67.7% pass completion rate for 11,852 yards, 71 touchdowns and 38 interceptions in eight NFL seasons. He backed up Tom Brady with the New England Patriots for the first three seasons before Pat traded him to the 49ers in 2017.
In his five seasons with San Francisco, Garoppolo quarterbacked the team to Super Bowl LIV (lost 31-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs) and the 2022 NFC Championship Game (lost 20-17 to the Los Angeles Rams). A solid player when healthy, he missed 13 games in 2018 with a torn ACL and only six in 2020 with a sprained ankle.
Garoppolo completed 301 of 441 passes for the Niners last season for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
