Georgia Tech is making big changes on the offensive side of the ball, hoping for big improvements on the offensive side of the ball.
Only one former offensive staff coach remains and that is offensive line coach Brent Key. Tulane offensive coordinator Chip Long has been hired as offensive coordinator and tight end coach for 2021, Mike Daniels is coming from Buffalo as running back coach, and Del Alexander is a new addition after his time at Notre Dame. A wide receiver coach, Chris Weinke was hired as the new quarterback coach.
These coaches have previous Power Five experience, and that’s a big deal. From a results and experience standpoint, Georgia Tech has made upgrades in nearly every hiring of new offensive staff, and that should pay off. The question is how quickly these results will pay off.
Georgia Tech also brought several transfers to the offensive side of the ball across all positions.
Zach Gibson, quarterback – moved from Akron
Taisun Phommachanh, quarterback – transferred from Clemson
Dylan McDuffie, running back – played for Daniels in Buffalo last season
Hassan Hall, running back – moved from Louisville
EJ Jenkins, Wide Receiver – From South Carolina
Pierce Quick, Offensive Line – Transferred from Alabama
Paul Cio joins from Offensive Line-Clemson
RJ Adams, offensive line – moved from Kentucky
Cory Robinson, Offensive Line – Transferred from Kansas
Head coach Jeff Collins made a point of trying to get the most out of quarterback Jeff Sims this season.Long and Winekey were hired with Sims in mind. This offense needs a talented quarterback this season. He has the talent to be one of his quarterbacks who excels in his ACC dual-threat, but inconsistency and turnovers hamper it.

Sims’ improved leadership skills and leadership have been much talked about by offensive coaches this offseason and fall camp. At a recent press conference, Long praised his Sims and his efforts to become better leaders.
“I’m really excited about Jeff. He’s taken it upon himself to really improve his game. Like I said the last time I spoke to you guys, we’re going through the spring and summer. , you just get to see the guy gradually getting better. Like any quarterback, you’ll have good days and you’ll have bad days. It’s just another coach out there that ties it all together. It’s been really great.
Gibson is a favorite as Sims’ backup this season. He threw for nearly 1,300 yards and scored 10 touchdowns on the Zips last season. Sims was injured last season, but having an experienced quarterback like Gibson would be an improvement over last year’s depth.
The big story in the running game is the fact that Gibbs is gone, no man with his raw talent, but I think this is the deepest position group on the offense.Dontae Smith is ready for a breakout season. it’s finished. Smith averaged about 6 yards per carry and also had 4 touchdowns.
McDuffie could be one of the most influential transfers for the team. He surpassed his 1,000 yards and was the lead back for the Bulls last year, so the rapport with Daniels as running back coach will be huge. Hall comes from Louisville and looks like a big threat in the rotation.

The wide receiver position is a concern. Malachi Carter, the team’s leading receiver from last season, is back, but there are plenty of players who need to step up, and Long recently said:
“It’s like offensive lines and we’re going to go with hot hands. You know, if we can get three guys on the border giving us 15 snaps, that’s about as much as they can I need an alpha to show up in that group.Nate McCallum was probably the most consistent of them. It’s going to be played by the committee there.Game As we go along, who’s hot handed. A lot of people are trying to play, and the ones who play the most are those who are playing and aren’t confused there. There’s a lot of work to be done there. ) Alexander is doing great.Working with what he has but needs some guys to step up and be more consistent in that position and for that matter There can be no doubt.
One notable figure is Jenkins, who moved from South Carolina. Jenkins sizes his 6-7 245 LBS and are used to create a mismatch. He’ll have to work hard to become a more complete receiver, but the positives are clearly there.
The slot receiver position will continue this fall, and it looks like Nate McCallum will be a key part of the passing offense. Malik Rutherford and Jamal Haynes will also be competing for spots.
There is young talent in this room, but it is unproven. Leo Blackburn, Ryan King, Kalani Norris, DJ Moore and James Blackstrain have something to offer on the field this year to improve this passing offense.
Tight ends are used more in this offense than they used to be, and Dylan Leonard, converted receiver Peje Harris, and Luke Benson are guys who see more targets. Expect to see the sets and guys moving around the field often. He is one of the team’s strongest units.

Georgia Tech tight end Dylan Leonard will have a new role on the offense this season.

The offensive line has been revamped this offseason, and coaches are trying to find the right mix of players to look at the field. Jordan Williams’ tackle for his spot is he’s one, but there’s a lot of competition elsewhere. Jakiah Leftwich, Pierce Quick, Paul Tchio and Weston Franklin are the people most likely to see the field the most.
There may be no more important position for Georgia Tech than the offensive line. How quickly the coaching staff can find the right mix of players will be a storyline to watch.
Overall, the offense has an upgraded coaching staff and potential for improvement. Sims is working to have his best season yet and I think running his back he room and tight his end his room will both be strengths. I’m curious about the wide receiver and offensive line. There need to be outside guys stepping up to be consistent playmakers for this offense, and given the opponents on the schedule, the line needs to gel quickly. , I think it will be an above average unit
