A Texas resident diagnosed with monkeypox has died, Texas health officials said Tuesday.
This death is the first monkeypox-related death reported in the United States.
This individual is suffering from multiple serious illnesses, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
in the majority of people,
Children under the age of 8, people with compromised immune systems, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding are at increased risk of infection and serious illness.
“However, the CDC and the medical community know that in certain circumstances and circumstances, monkeypox can become a more serious infection and even fatal,” said FOLX, a sexual health care specialist. Dr. Michelle Faucier, a health clinician, told Healthline.
According to the World Health Organization, the fatality rate of monkeypox is
Most people who get monkeypox develop painful, uncomfortable lesions, but it can be more serious in people with underlying health problems, says Forcier.
“Deaths in people infected with monkeypox are related to health-care vulnerabilities due to other health problems, or problems related to lack of access and adequate health care,” Faucier said.
According to Forcier, the more serious complications of monkeypox include skin infections, pneumonia, encephalitis or infection and inflammation of brain tissue, and eye and vision problems.
“Few details are known about this first case in the United States,” said Dr. Jorge Salinas, an infectious disease expert and hospital epidemiologist at Stanford University.
Salinas says it’s important for people at risk of monkeypox to get vaccinated.
“Immunosuppressed people who are not part of the at-risk population have a lower risk of contracting monkeypox,” Salinas said.
Most people with monkeypox recover at home without treatment.
Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help relieve symptoms. Antihistamines help relieve itching and irritation.
An antiviral drug called Tecovarimat is available for people at risk of developing serious complications from monkeypox.
Call your healthcare provider if you have been recently exposed to the virus or are experiencing symptoms. You can also contact your local health department, which can provide resources on treatment, vaccination and contact tracing efforts, Forcier said.
“Monkeypox usually goes away without severe or long-term complications, but it’s best to avoid contracting it and helping to avoid its spread,” Forcier said.
