Accra, Ghana – a A US congressional delegation led by Speaker Barbara Lee will visit Ghana from August 25-27, 2022. The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between the United States and Ghana, the U.S. emphasis on Ghana’s leadership in West Africa, and a range of global issues, from climate to security.
The delegation met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, government officials, parliamentarians, civil society groups and other development partners on issues of mutual interest between the United States and Ghana.
At Tema, a seven-member delegation met with stakeholders from the fisheries sector, including Minister Mavis Hawa Coombeson, and the United States to restore fisheries in Ghana through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and fight illegal, unreported and unregulated. We exchanged views on government support. canoe basin. The delegation also toured the SEKAF Shea Company, supporting tens of thousands of female shea growers and supporting the Sustainable Development Initiative, a partnership between USAID and the Global Shea Alliance, which has helped increase global demand for shea products. On Saturday, August 27, the group visited Ridge Hospital to speak with health officials from the maternal and child health department about their work and the challenges they face. Delegates also heard how U.S. assistance has helped reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and improve the skills and training of midwives and nurses.
A congressional delegation then joined the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts and the WEB DuBois Museum Foundation to commemorate his death 59 years later at the WEB DuBois Memorial Center in Accra. Ambassador Virginia E. Palmer and President Barbara Lee addressed the event and laid a memorial wreath at his grave.
The visit also included individual engagements with U.S. Government Exchange Program alumni, Peace Corps volunteers, and Fulbright Scholars.
