2022 World Cup hosts Qatar lost 2-0 to Ecuador in their opening match.
Ecuador scored all the goals in the first half. And it was Ener Valencia who scored both goals for La Tri. Valencia scored a penalty in the 15th minute. He then scored his second late in the second half with an elegant header that found the bottom left corner of Qatar’s goal.
With his two goals, Valencia became his country’s all-time leading scorer with 37 goals in 75 national team appearances.
The South American nation has now won eight consecutive international matches, winning 15 of its last 16 matches.
The hosts had trouble coming up with attacks in the match. He fired five shots at Ecuador’s goal for Qatar, but none of them hit.
Until Sunday, the host nation had never lost a World Cup opener in its last 21 tournaments.
Ecuador’s next game is against the Netherlands on Friday. Qatar will face Senegal in their second group stage match on Friday.
